Environment

Detailed environmental management programs have been incorporated into all aspects of Anvil’s operations. The Company’s goal is the implementation of international best practices and technology based on World Bank guidelines, DRC Mining code regulations and global industry codes.

Not one significant environmental infraction or incident was reported during the year; a reflection of prevention strategies for work practices and ongoing employee and contractor training. Environmental management systems are monitored on an annual basis by the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager and an environmental team made up exclusively of local Congolese staff.

Transparency

As part of its commitment to transparency and accountability, Anvil has welcomed external review of the Company’s operations. This includes a 2005 report by Professor Emeritus Jim Freedman, based on OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The review indicates that the Company is 82% compliant on the set of 21 parameters selected by Professor Freedman. OECD Audit on Anvil Mining Limited – August 2006

Looking forward, Anvil is working on the implementation of a comprehensive Voluntary Principles program throughout the Company, and on the continued support for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, both of which are key to the successful growth of the DRC.
